FAQs

Do I qualify for affordable housing?
The Housing Company offers a variety of affordable housing opportunities. In the majority of our apartments, your household’s annual income may not exceed specified income limits. Income limits will be different in each county. In some communities, we offer apartments that do not have income restrictions. All applicants must meet our Resident Selection Policy. You will find the selection policy on each property page. Back to Top

How much rent will I pay?
Rents will vary at each apartment community. If you are applying for a Section 8 rental-assisted apartment, your rent payment will be equal to 30% of your adjusted annual income. Various deductions may apply. In apartments without rental assistance, rents are established in accordance with regulations that govern the apartments. Many of our communities offer rental units which are not restricted by income limits (market rate units). Rents at all of our communities are very affordable. Please contact the property you are interested in to find out about apartment availability. We maintain waiting lists at all of our apartment communities. Back to Top

How do I apply?
You may print an application and mail it to the property you have chosen, or you may personally submit the application at the apartment community office. Applications are available on the property pages, and are also available at each office. Office hours vary at each community. We encourage you to call for an appointment and visit any of our properties. Back to Top

What is the difference between Section 8 and Affordable Housing?
Section 8 housing provides project-based rental assistance. This means that the rent is subsidized and the amount of rent you pay is based on your monthly income, minus certain deductions. Affordable housing offers different income qualifying levels. Rent at these communities varies depending upon the income level target for each apartment and provides affordability to a wide range of residents. Market rate apartments are also offered at most of our Affordable housing communities. This means that no income restrictions apply to these apartments even though the market rate rents are usually very affordable. Back to Top

What are the eligibility requirements?
We have tenant selection criteria for all our properties. You can view this on the property page. Income qualifications will vary depending upon the type of property you are interested in. Back to Top

Will my name be placed on a waiting list?
In order to obtain housing in our communities, you must request that your name be placed on the waiting list. This is accomplished by completing an Application. We encourage you to make an appointment with the Resident Manager to discuss any questions you have about the application process. We do offer waiting list preferences, which establish the rank of individuals on the list. These preferences are detailed in the Resident Selection Policy and the Resident Manager will assist you in determining if you qualify for a preference. Back to Top

How long will it take to be approved for an apartment?
The standard time for application approval varies. We process credit and criminal reports and also check past rental history and professional references. Generally, we will process an application for an income-restricted apartment in 10-14 days. This time frame is due to processing income verifications. For a Market rent apartment, the time frame is generally within 3-10 days. Back to Top

Can you send me an application?
Yes! You can contact us at 1-800-361-5181 or contact the property office. We will be happy to send you an application. Applications are also available at each property or you can print one from our property page. Back to Top

Will a Housing Choice Voucher be accepted?
Yes! We give waiting list preference to families with Housing Choice Vouchers or families who have applied and are waiting to receive a voucher. Information about Housing Choice Vouchers is available at our Affordable housing communities. Back to Top

How can I apply for employment with The Housing Company?
